Envirocon Goes International as Demolition Crews Head to Canada for Smelter Project

While already known as a leader in industrial facility demolition projects in the Western United States, Envirocon, Inc. will now head north upon award of a complex smelter modernization project in British Columbia, Canada.

The recently-award smelter modernization project in British Columbia is anticipated to begin in March 2011. The smelter was constructed in 1956 and is undergoing a major modernization project that will employ over 1,500 workers. Prior to the commencement of construction activities, large portions of the existing facility must be demolished. The scope of work for the demolition project has been broadly divided into three phases; building cleaning, reduction cell demolition, and structure demolition. Envirocon will be responsible for performing the reduction cell demolition.

Envirocon’s specific work activities will include reduction cell removal, and the dismantling and segregation of the cells into their component materials including anode carbon, spent potliner, pot steel, and aluminum bus.

Eight years ago, Envirocon began offering clients the option of demolishing their inactive facilities in order to eliminate liability and turn idle facilities into positive capital. Envirocon’s extensive experience in this specific service line has led to the recovery of nearly $150 million in assets at various smelter sites including The Dalles Aluminum Smelter facility in Oregon, and both the Longview Aluminum Evergreen Aluminum and Golden Northwest Aluminum Smelter facilities in Washington.

In total, Envirocon demolition crews have removed, sized, and salvaged approximately 2,000 individual reduction cells, 80,000 tons of ferrous material, and 9,000,000 lbs. of non-ferrous material at various smelters.

The significant value contained within these heavy industrial and manufacturing facilities due to steel, copper, aluminum, and exotic metals content, gives owners the opportunity to demolish these shuttered liabilities and gain a return on their past investments. Demolition of an idle facility also offers the benefits of decreased liabilities, reduced maintenance costs, minimized tax burdens, and an improved balance sheet, to name a few, all without capital outlays.
