Hand Safety: It’s in Your Hands!
Whether complex or simple, the tasks we perform with our hands require care, awareness, and focus. A hand injury, even a minor one, can lead to loss of motion, agility, and grip. Hands are critical for things like driving, opening doors, eating, and buttoning your shirt. On a construction site, strong, healthy hands are essential to virtually every task you perform. Approximately 25% of all work injuries involve hands or fingers.
The first and most important thing you need to do is recognize the hazard before attempting the task. Assess the risk, analyze how to control the risk, and act in a safe manner. Ask yourself the following questions:
Where do hazards pose risks to my hands?
What machinery, power tools, or hand tools will I be using?
What sharp hand tools or knives are required?
Are my gloves the right size and type for the task?
Do I have the proper tool/knife for the material I am cutting?
Have I removed all jewelry or loose clothing that may get in the way?
The hand is one of the most important tools and so is the brain—use both carefully.
Work smart. Pay attention. Plan ahead. Use gloves. Protect your hands
