Hanford Team Awarded Clean-up of Waste Sites Near D and DR Reactors

TerranearPMC, Envirocon’s prime contractor at the Washington Closure Hanford site in Richland, Washington, has been awarded more environmental cleanup work totaling an estimated $6.1 million.

The team recently received $5.5 million to clean up 11 waste sites near the D and DR reactors along the Columbia River at Hanford. However, the subcontract will likely be expanded to include an additional 20 sites nearby.

The scope of work at the sites includes tearing out pipelines and septic systems and removing contaminated soil. The waste is expected to be hauled to a disposal facility designed for low-level radioactive and chemical waste.

Terranear was also awarded a subcontract for more than $600,000 to sample 40 sites along the Columbia River, including sites near the D, DR, K East and K West Reactors.

The goal is to have the initial 11 waste sites cleaned up by May 2011, with the additional waste sites near the adjacent D and DR Reactors and near the H Reactor cleaned up by the end of September 2013.

The Terranear/Envirocon team has been awarded more than $40 million in Washington Closure subcontracts. Projects have included work at the highly radioactive 618-10 Burial Ground, cleaning up the hazardous 618-7 Burial Ground, clearing the old firing range and demolishing buildings.
