Envirocon Awarded Second Project at Same Site, Natomas Cross Canal South Levee Phase 1B Improvement Project

Envirocon was recently awarded the Natomas Cross Canal South Levee Phase 1B Improvement Project in Sacramento for the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA). The scope of work that Envirocon will perform includes levee degrade to approximately ½ of the existing levee height, installation of approximately 228,400 square feet of soil-bentonite (SB) cutoff wall, with a length of 3,600 linear feet and depths up to 75 feet below the levee crown, and levee restoration to pre-existing conditions. This will be the second project Envirocon has executed at the same site. The previous project included installation of a soil-cement-bentonite cutoff wall along the western portion of a levee which was 6,000 feet in length. The wall included 500 feet of the Sacramento River east levee that bordered the Garden Highway. Approximately 370,000 square feet of the cutoff wall was installed up to 85-feet below the levee crown using the deep soil mixing (DSM) technique. The project was completed within a limited construction period, starting in early August 2007 and reaching substantial completion by September 30, 2007. To meet the demands of the schedule, Envirocon performed DSM and slurry trench operations using double shifts, 6 to 7 days per week. During levee degrade and restoration portions of the project, as many as 300 loads of soil were hauled in and out of the project each day with limited site access. This was the first time in its 19-year history that Envirocon had completed a project of this size in such a short duration of time.
