Beale AFB Soil Bentonite Cutoff Wall
Envirocon was awarded the construction of a soil-bentonite cut-off wall (SBCW) and zero-valent iron (ZVI) permeable reactive barrier (PRB) for the Beale Air Force Base ERP project located in Marysville, California. The area of operation is located on Site 17 which occupies approximately 500 acres of gently sloping grassland. The purpose of the SBCW is to capture and funnel, under natural gradients, TCE-contaminated groundwater through the ZVI PRB wall. The system is installed to prevent further spread of contamination while providing a means of long-term, non-mechanical treatment. Envirocon will mobilize at the end of June 2007 to install the 48,000 sf of SBCW and 3,200 sf of ZVI PRB wall. The project will be complete by the end of July. Site 17 is located within an area designed as a "riparian habitat preservation area." The habitat preservation area is designed to protect unique, rare, and otherwise important habitats. The important habitats within Site 17 include areas of forest, scrub, and marsh habitat along the waterways.
