Sacramento Rail Yard Remediation
Sacramento, California
Envirocon recently commenced work at the former rail yard in downtown Sacramento, California. This project anchors the critical path of construction for one of the largest and most visible re-development projects in the state of California. The expected duration of this project is approximately two years. Envirocon began working on this site over seven years ago. For this phase of the project, Envirocon is tasked with the construction of an on-site landfill cell by placing and compacting in excess of 100,000 cubic yards of asbestos- and lead-contaminated material stockpiled from prior phases of work. Upon completion of fill activities, the cell will be capped with a geomembrane liner and a clean soil cover. Concurrently, Envirocon will excavate and stockpile an additional 250,000 cubic yards of other contaminated materials from across the 240-acre site into 500 cubic yard stockpiles for characterization of contaminants including lead, asbestos, and petroleum hydrocarbons. Some of the soil containing elevated levels of lead will be chemically stabilized and loaded into gondola type railcars for transportation to an out of state disposal facility. Other material may be added to the landfill cell prior to closure or re-used on site as fill while site construction progresses.
