2006 Brownfields Team Award
Envirocon recently completed the Kendall Yards Brownfields Remediation Project in Spokane, Washington. The 80-acre Kendall Yards site is located in the West Central neighborhood near downtown Spokane, and was home to a steam locomotive repair and servicing complex between 1914 and 1955. The facility reportedly serviced both coal- and oil-fired steam powered equipment.

Envirocon began operations on September 9, 2005, and completed remediation activities on January 16, 2006. Approximately 223,191 tons of contaminated soil was excavated and transported from the site. The source of contamination appeared to be historic leakage and spills of oil from storage and distribution facilities, as well as from ash and other debris dumped during railroad operations. The extent of contaminated material significantly exceeded the original estimate of 91,000 tons. The volume of contaminated material hauled off site increased per day, as the number of trucks hauling increased from five to a maximum of 29 trucks. The soil was disposed of at the Waste Management/Graham Road Recycling and Disposal Facility in Medical Lake, Washington, a licensed subtitle D landfill. Despite the fact that the volume of contaminated soil increased by 245%, Envirocon remained on schedule and completed the total project in record-breaking time for a site cleanup of this nature.

This Brownfields site included over 40 parcels of varying size, and was granted the largest loan for a Brownfields Remediation project in the United States to date. The cleanup project was completed within 12 months of application for Brownfields funding, which is the fastest Brownfields remediation, of this size, in the nation.

On March 28, 2006, the U.S. EPA announced that the Kendall Yards project team was selected to receive the 2006 Outstanding Brownfields Team Award. This award was designed to recognize excellence in regional waste management and emergency response programs and is only awarded to one project per year.
