Contract Award - UMTRA Site Moab, Utah

Envirocon was a awarded a subcontract by EnergySolutions for excavation, material conditioning, and intermodal container loading activities at DOE's Uranium Mine Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) site in Moab, Utah.

Envirocon's anticipated scope of work will include the excavation, conditioning, and loading of 2.52 million tons of "On-pile" tailings comprised of cover soils, transition soils, and slimes; the excavation and transport of 275,000 tons of "Off-pile" soils which surround the main tailings impoundment; and the O&M of the tailings pile dewatering system.

This project is the first phase of a much larger effort to relocate more than 12 million cubic yards of relic uranium mill tailings from the flood plain of the Colorado River to a dedicated repository 30 miles to the north along I-70 near Crescent Junction. Due to the potential traffic safety concerns, DOE has elected to ship the waste via rail in intermodal containers, utilizing a UPRR branch line adjacent to the site. The overall performance period for this contract is 5 years. The EnergySolutions Team is tasked with constructing haul roads, rail loading infrastructure, constructing the Crescent Junction repository, procuring all equipment required for the project including more than 400 specially designed intermodal containers, and piloting the excavation and conditioning methodology. At full production, the project will ship more than 5,000 tons per day to the Crescent Junction repository for disposal. Envirocon's activities are expected to require up to 34 months for completion.
