Envirocon was contracted to provide both complete and selective demolition and dismantlement services at a cement plant in Holly Hill, South Carolina. Safety and efficiency in project performance were top priorities for Envirocon at the site.
Portions of the plant required complete structure removal, which was accomplished by conventional means such as excavator-mounted sheers, processors, and hoe rams. In certain cases, such as the demolition of a couple of tall concrete stacks, explosive demolition techniques were used. Numerous tanks, vessels, and equipment ranging from single to twelve story steel and concrete structures were demolished and removed from the site.
Areas requiring selective demolition used heavy rigging, engineering, and innovative processes implemented by Envirocon's experienced staff. Select building structures and associated utilities were to remain intact, including plant process slurry lines and two 4160 KVA shielded electrical cables. These lines ran directly beneath some of the ten-story structures to be removed.
Using established investment recovery and asset management experience, Envirocon was able to sell useful equipment such as tanks, silos, conveyors, and mills for re-use. Experience in the scrap metals market also allowed Envirocon to recover, prepare, and sell more than 12,000 tons of ferrous and non-ferrous metals directly to recycling consumers. Total asset sales generated just under $2 million and fully offset the cost of the demolition.
Items salvaged for recycling included:
- Four large slurry tanks;
- Eight silos and elevators;
- Two steel cement kilns 12 foot by 500 foot;
- Two steel cement kilns 19 foot by 560 foot;
- Seven large ball mills;
- Precipitator, pre-heater, clinker cooler, bag house and support buildings;
- Various condensers, compressors, heat exchangers; and
- Two coal mills.
