450MW Coal-Fired Power Plant Demolition
Site Overview
After more than 50 years in service, this coal-fired generating station ceased operations, and demolition planning began as part of the client’s strategy to reduce emissions, achieve a more balanced generation portfolio, and comply with new environmental regulations. Envirocon provided comprehensive decontamination, decommissioning, and demolition services at the site.
Project Highlights
- Performed pre-mobilization planning, permitting, regulatory support, and final plan document preparation to increase safety and efficiency during execution
- Abatement of hazardous waste included asbestos containing material (ACM), PCBs, lead-containing coatings, and universal wastes
- Decommissioned and demolished the three-unit, 450MW coal-fired generating station through both mechanical and explosive means with structures and stacks up to 200-feet tall
- Recovered salvageable assets and scrap resulting in recycling over 610,000 pounds of various metals and on-site reuse of 12,000 tons of concrete as fill
Value Delivered
Envirocon’s comprehensive asset recovery and recycling program resulted in the resale of over 150 valves and 24 pieces of electrical equipment, and the recycling of 610,000 pounds of copper wire, brass, steel, and other non-ferrous metals. Approximately 12,000 tons of concrete was reused fill material. This provided a $4 million scrap/salvage total credit to the client.
