Break for Safety: National Safety Stand-Down

SafBreak-For-Safety_SafetyStanddown-01ety is the cornerstone of Envirocon’s Operational Excellence philosophy. This is embodied in our incident-free goal for every project. Continually improving our safety performance is an ongoing process at Envirocon, one that we take very seriously. As part of educating our employees and promoting a safe work environment, Envirocon participated in the National Safety Stand-Down.

This year’s annual Safety Stand-Down focused on fall prevention, and all of Envirocon’s teams participated. The event was sponsored by OSHA, the National Safety Council, WorkSafeBC, and several other organizations. Envirocon encouraged each of their project teams to address some of the possible fall hazards associated with our work, emphasizing the importance of planning ahead and providing the right equipment and training before doing any elevated work tasks.

OSHA research showed that falls are the leading cause of death in construction. In 2014, there were 337 fatal falls out of 874 total fatalities in construction. Preventing falls and saving lives can be achieved through three simple steps:

  1. PLAN ahead to get the job done safely.
  2. PROVIDE the right equipment.
  3. TRAIN everyone to use the equipment safely.

As part of the safety stand-down, Envirocon employees were presented with an example scenario. Together, they analyzed the situation and discussed what steps could have been taken to prevent the fall.
